Covering an expansive area of 800 square miles, stretching from the picturesque town of Chipping Campden in the north to the historic city of Bath in the south, the Cotswolds is a region that boasts an abundance of charming villages dating back to Medieval times. The variety and appeal of each village make it difficult to choose just one when time is limited. Each village provides a snapshot of the rich heritage and stunning landscapes that define this part of England. Even a single visit to one of these enchanting villages can reveal the reasons behind the admiration that countless visitors express for the Cotswolds. The rolling hills, quaint stone cottages, and lush greenery create an idyllic setting that captivates the hearts of visitors.
Having guided travelers with limited time to this region on several occasions, I offer my recommendations for maximizing a short visit to this picturesque area.
Note that tour buses can cover more distance, so these recommendations are for individuals planning to drive themselves. Keep in mind that in England, drivers use the opposite side of the road and sit on the opposite side of the car. If it's your first time driving on the opposite side, I recommend renting a car with an automatic transmission. Also note that parking lots around many of the Cotswold villages are a considerable distance from the village itself. Wear your walking shoes!
Journeying from London to the Cotswolds
If traveling from London, consider making Chipping Campden your evening destination. At just over 2 hours from London, Chipping Campden enables you to enjoy the villages of Bourton-on-the-Water and Moreton in Marsh before arriving at your stop for the night. This delightful village serves as a perfect gateway to the Cotswolds, offering both comfort and character. The Cotswolds House Hotel provides a cozy retreat to relax after a day of exploration, while the crackling fire in the bar at the Red Lion Tavern enhances the warmth and charm of the area, creating an ideal setting for relaxation.
In the heart of Chipping Campden lies the Chipping Campden Market Hall, a stunning historical landmark situated prominently on High Street. This exquisite and iconic Market Hall, which was constructed in the year 1627, is encircled by ancient houses built from the region's famous honey-colored stone. As you stroll through the area, it's easy to visualize the marketplace bustling with traders and villagers from centuries past. During my visit, I was fortunate enough to witness a local trader proudly displaying his goods within the hall, a scene that beautifully encapsulated the enduring spirit of community and commerce that has characterized Chipping Campden for generations.
Don't miss a walk to St. James Church.

Journeying from Bath to the Cotswolds
If your travels lead you north from the historic city of Bath, I recommend exploring the charming towns of Tetbury and Malmesbury, both of which offer a wealth of experiences and sights. Tetbury, once a vital market for Cotswold wool and yarn during the Middle Ages, has transformed into a hub of boutique shops, exceptional dining options, and noteworthy Royal connections. Its historical significance dates back to the mid-sixth century when the Saxons finally gained control over this region from the Britons, establishing a legacy that continues to resonate today.
Malmesbury is particularly special, as it holds the distinction of being the oldest borough in England, with a charter granted by the legendary King Alfred the Great around the year 880. This rich history is palpable as you wander through the town, where ancient architecture and historical landmarks tell the story of its long-standing significance in English history. The charm of both Tetbury and Malmesbury lies not only in their historical roots but also in the vibrant culture and community spirit that can be felt in every corner, making them worthy stops on your journey through the enchanting Cotswolds.
For overnight accommodations in this region of the Cotswolds, a stay at the Whatley Manor Hotel and Spa will not disappoint. In fact, you may never want to leave!
With numerous films showcasing the allure of the Cotswolds, this region attracts many visitors. Choosing just one village to explore can be challenging, as each offers something unique and delightful. However, even with limited time, a visit is highly worthwhile. No matter which village you choose, you're sure to fall in love with the Cotswolds.
